Shaving implies regrowth. IPL implies extinction. Here is how to kill the follicle at home.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.
It works on the principle of Selectivity. The device flashes a broad spectrum of heavy light energy. Dark objects (hairs) absorb this light instantly and get superheated to 70°C, destroying the growth center. Light objects (surrounding skin) reflect the light and stay cool.
This is why contrast is key. You need Dark Hair and Light Skin for IPL to work safely.
2/10 Pain
"Warm flick"
6/10 Pain
"Spicy snap"
4/10 Pain
"Startling flash"
*Note: If you have darker skin, the pain runs higher because your skin absorbs more heat. Lower the intensity setting.
If you fake tanned or sunbathed recently, DO NOT USE IPL. Your skin has extra pigment that will attract the heat and cause burns. Wait 2 weeks for the tan to fade.
You MUST shave comfortably before using IPL. The light needs to travel down the hair shaft inside the pore. If there is hair on the surface, it will just singe and smell like burning hair.

Modern IPL devices have contact sensors—they won't flash unless fully pressed against skin. You generally don't need goggles, but look away when you press the button.
